Roja Productions – Information and Details

Roja Productions is a media company which focuses on innovative and interesting programs for television as well for use in museums and other public venues. The company strives to break new ground when it comes to new digital formats and strives to present hard hitting and truly unique productions.

Roja produced several exceptional programs for PBS. The first was Citizen King and it focused on the biography of Martin Luther King, Jr. as seen from the viewpoint of the people. It was broadcast in January 2004 on The American Experience to coincide with the 75th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr’s birth.

The documentary drew on input from a broad cross section of people to help to examine the last five years of Martin Luther King Jr’s life. It was directed by Orlando Bagwell and Noland Walker.

The show was written by Orlando Bagwell and Noland Walker (who also directed the show together) and starred Taylor Branch, David Halberstam and Dr. Martin Luther King.

The Executive Producer of this show is Orlando Bagwell who is also the President of Roja Productions. He is an accomplished filmmaker with over eighteen years of critically acclaimed productions. His filmography includes Executive Producer of Africans in America: America’s Journey through Slavery, which was produced for WGBH and was nationally broadcast on PBS in October 1999.

Other credits include the production of Malcolm X: Make it Plain which aired on The American Experience in 1995. Bagwell was also the supervising producer on the national PBS series The Great Depression as well as a staff producer for the national PBS weekly program entitled Frontline. He did this during 1988 and 1989.

In 1989, Bagwell founded Roja Productions and produced the company’s first documentary entitled Roots of Resistance: A Story of the Underground Railroad. This was produced for The American Experience on PBS.
